The Muzzle Brake and the Compensator are the different names for devices used for the same purpose, which is to reduce recoil. This barrel attachment reduces the recoil of a weapon by dispersing gas on the muzzle of the weapon. However, muzzle brakes/compensators increase the loudness and flash of a firearm.
This article page is separated into the Muzzle Brake and Compensator. The only difference is when the dispersing holes of the device are placed vertically or horizontally.
|Kills Required||120 (240 for Stevens DB and Sawed Off)|
Reduces horizontal recoil and drift by dispersing muzzle gases vertically, but slightly increases vertical recoil climb. –In-game description
The Compensator is a barrel attachment available to all weapons except Integrally Suppressed Weapons. It is unlocked at 120 kills on all weapons aside from the Stevens DB and Sawed Off where it is unlocked at 240 kills instead. It can also be bought for 220 credits (CR) for all weapons initially or 340 credits initially for the Stevens DB and Sawed Off.
The Compensator, when attached to a weapon, reduces horizontal recoil at the cost of increased vertical recoil. It is useful on weapons that have very high horizontal recoil such as the AUG A3, AUG A1, or the AK47, or to mitigate the downsides of other attachments, as is the case with the Folding Grip.
Note that the Compensator does not act like a suppressor and hide muzzle flash.

|Kills Required||175 (350 for Stevens DB and Sawed Off)|
Reduces vertical recoil climb while firing by muzzle gas to the side. Trade off in slightly increased horizontal recoil drifting. –In-game description
The Muzzle Brake is a barrel attachment available to all weapons except Integrally Suppressed Weapons. It is unlocked at 175 kills on all weapons aside from the Stevens DB and Sawed Off where it is unlocked at 350 kills instead. It can also be bought for 275 credits (CR) for all weapons initially or 440 credits initially for the Stevens DB and Sawed Off.
Unlike the Compensator which reduces horizontal recoil and increases vertical recoil, the Muzzle Brake does the opposite by decreasing vertical recoil in exchange for increased horizontal drift. Weapons with huge vertical recoil such as the M231, AG-3 and FAL 50.00 can take a great advantage from the Muzzle Brake. The Muzzle Brake also finds purpose on some designated marksman rifles and dedicated single shot weapons that see use at longer ranges like the Dragunov SVU and Dragunov SVDS.
Similar to the Compensator, the Muzzle Brake does not act like a suppressor and cannot hide muzzle flash.
