A Korean automatic shotgun. Featuring a tight group of pellets at a very low muzzle velocity, dealing low damage with an unmatched firerate and boasts a quick reload. Now where are those frag rounds...
–In-game description

The USAS-12 is a Korean Shotgun available in Phantom Forces. It is unlocked at rank 189 or could be purchased using credits.

History[]

The USAS's dates back to more vintage designs of Maxwell Atchisson around the 1980s. Around 1989, Gilbert Equipment Co., a US-based company, decided to bring up the selective fire weapon designed by John Trevor Jr., mostly based on the principles used by Atchisson Shotguns (AA-12). Since Gilbert Equipment Co. had no manufacturing capabilities, it began looking for manufacturers, although the only taker was Daewoo Precision Industries, part of the South Korean Daewoo Conglomerate (now SNT Motiv). Daewoo engineers adapted the new weapon to their manufacturing techniques, and mass production commenced in the early 1990s. The USAS-12 sold well to military and security forces of several (unspecified) countries in Asia, and more than 30,000 USAS-12 shotguns were made by the mid-1990s.[1]

In-Game[]

General Information[]

The USAS-12 is a fully-automatic shotgun—the second in line after AA-12. It has a high rate of fire (RoF) at 450 RPM, much faster than all shotguns even the Saiga-12 by default, even with Muzzle Booster equipped. Damage, however, was below-average, with the USAS-12 dealing 20 damage up close, and 9 at all ranges—dealing 160 -> 72 damage assuming if all pellets hit by the end of the damage-drop off. Range is average, though the damage range was quite lower, at 35 studs, before ending at 110 studs. Muzzle velocity is slightly lower than most shotguns, though average, at 1,300 studs/s.

The pellet spread for the USAS-12 is quite tight for a fully automatic shotgun, though accuracy is poor. The minimum TTK is typical for any shotguns, however, the poor damage, range, and accuracy makes it far less consistent and performs more terribly beyond close ranges.

Per shot recoil is quite moderate, and given its fastest fire rate, the vertical recoil becomes harsh when fired in fully automatic. With a high firerate and only a magazine capacity of 10 rounds, reloads are far common, and it is quite slow, with 2.4 seconds for a partial reload, and 3.3 seconds for an empty reload.

Usage & Tactics[]

The USAS-12, in stock form, has very high recoil, which is worsened by the fact that it fires extremely fast for a shotgun, heavily increasing the recoil. Unlike AA-12, it doesn't have an extended magazine, meaning at just 10 rounds, it will quickly run out through reckless use, necessitating frequent, slow reloads. Given the poor minimum damage and muzzle velocity, one must not use the USAS at long ranges, where its ranged effectiveness, beyond its short maximum damage range, quickly falter more than any other shotguns despite its gradual dropoff.

A way to reduce the recoil is to use optics like the Delta Sight, Kousaku Sight, both are low-zoom optics, which may reduce visible gun recoil, while AMT-Terminator. forgoes the need to ADS. Another attachment that would help reduce the recoil is Muzzle Brake because it helps to reduce the high vertical recoil. For the Underbarrel attachment slot, the best choice would be Vertical Grip, because it reduces the high vertical recoil whilst also benefitting more in hipfire performance, Stubby Grip, for reducing the overall recoil of the gun, or Folding Grip, which reduces the high camera recoil. In the Other category, Tri Laser or Yellow Laser would be the best because they help reduce the recoil of the gun. For ammo, viable options would be Birdshot or Flechette, because they allow for the gun to perform better in CQC.

There is only one specific way to use the USAS-12, and that is to use the tactic "Run and Gun" due to the fact that the gun has a high fire-rate and a 10 round magazine, which allows for the user to use it in CQC-oriented maps like Bazaar Revamp, Containers O' Fun, and occasionally, Metro.

Conclusion[]

The USAS-12 leans on more aggressiveness as that of the AA-12; it can deal a hefty load of damage up close, due to the fact that it has a 450 RPM and does 20 damage per pellet, Unlike any other shotgun, its effectiveness is less hindered by range due to it's tight pellet spread, meaning the USAS may also have some ranged potential, although unadvisable to use beyond medium ranges given its poor muzzle velocity and minimum damage.

Pros & Cons[]

Pros:

  • Fully automatic.
  • Has access to Semi-Auto conversion at no cost.
  • Fastest fire-rate of its class (at 450 RPM), surpassing the AA-12.
  • Tighter pellet spread.
  • Large magazine capacity of its class (at 10 rounds; tied to DBV-12).
  • Large ammunition reserves.
  • Decent minimum damage range and gradual damage range dropoff.

Cons:

  • Lower muzzle velocity.
  • Lower than average max and min damage per pellet.
  • Relatively short maximum damage range.
  • Moderate per-shot recoil.
  • Very harsh vertical recoil when spammed and in ADS.
  • Fairly slow reload times.
  • Inaccurate sight accuracy.
  • High ammo consumption rate leading to frequent reloads.

Trivia[]

  • The USAS-12 was added in the game on Version 5.4.3.
  • The description of the weapon most likely references its iteration in Battlefield 3 and how overpowered it was with the Frag round ammo type before getting nerfed.
    • FRAG-12 cartridges are a Highly Explosive 12-gauge cartridge originally developed for the AA-12 in order to repurpose it as a military defense system.
  • Due to the high firerate and similar magazine size, many people have compared this to the AA-12, another automatic shotgun, and had previously called it a "lower-rank worse AA-12". This is likely why its unlock rank in the test place has since been increased. Despite this, however, the reception was quite worse.
  • The USAS-12 is the second fully automatic shotgun to be added in the game, with AA-12 being the first; released in game at Version 4.4.0 in 2019.
  • In the Test Place, the USAS-12 used to have 100 rounds in reserve. Because of the most harshly negative reception at that time, by the time it was added to the main game it has now whittled down to 70.
